New Pearl Jam Album May Be First #1 in 13 Years

Pearl Jam is on track to score their first number one album on the charts in thirteen years, according to a report on Billboard.com.

According to Billboard, music industry prognosticators are predicting that the album, Backspacer, which was released Sunday, could shift anywhere between 175,000 to 200,000 copies by week’s end. That sales figure should easily move it ahead of the competition when the Billboard 200 chart for the period ending September 27 is published next Wednesday.

The new album — Pearl Jam’s first not with a major label — is sold exclusively in the United States through Target, iTunes, Pearl Jam’s Web site and independent retailers.

The Seattle-based grunge band has had a spate of number two albums on the charts, including their last release, 2006’s self-titled set. Their last number one album was No Code, released in 1996.

REVIEW: Pearl Jam “Backspacer” Rocks Target Stores, Bores Fans

The fact that Pearl Jam’s new album is being retailed almost exclusively by Target stores opens the band to endless ridicule and accusations of being sell-outs.

However, potential critics don’t need to use the weak “sell-out” argument because the album speaks for itself: it sounds like a band trying too hard to prove that it is still a rock band, with lackluster results. (On the plus side, it’s also the band’s shortest album, clocking in at just 37 minutes.)

It’s not easy being the last of a species, and grunge dinosaurs Pearl Jam know this better than anyone. The Seattle rockers have Continue reading »

New Alice in Chains CD, New Singer: Elton John?

Published August 11th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Elton John caused a stir when he collaborated with Eminem at the Grammys (filling in for Dido). Will people be as impressed by his pairing with grunge has-beens Alice in Chains?

Ok, sometimes, you just see a headline and hope that it’s a joke–like this one from Spin online, explaining that inexplicably re-formed grunge band Alice in Chains has recruited a very special guest star to perform on its first album following the drug overdose death of singer Layne Staley in 2002.

That special guest?  Elton John.

Um, really, guys? Who smells a tacky publicity stunt?

That’s right. It seems that somewhere in the twisted brains of this aged Seattle crew, the idea occurred to them, something like: “Hey! We’re already destroying whatever musical legacy we had by trying to cash-in with an album featuring a lame new singer, how can we make this more embarrassing? No, we won’t call Chris Cornell, that’s just silly…How about Elton John?”

So, will the Rocket Man’s collaboration with the band on the new album’s title track, “Black Gives Way to Blue,” sound like “Candle in the Wind: Grunge ‘97 Style”?

We hope not.

Do you think Alice in Chains should call it quits since Layne is Dead?

Pixies Minotaur Boxset: Will Fans Pay $450 For Albums They Already Own?

Published June 16th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: A video tour of the Pixies’ massive new $450 boxset, Minotaur. Is it worth it?

Would you drop $450 on a set of five albums you probably already own?

The Pixies certainly hope so.

Known for dynamic musical shifts and songs such as “Where is My Mind?,” “Cactus” and “Caribou,” the influential indie/alt-rock band is set to release a massive boxset that includes, among other things, all five of the Pixies’ original studio recordings. Reportedly weighing in at two feet tall and 25lbs, Minotaur may be the first deluxe boxset to live up to its name.

Available for presale orders beginning June 15, here’s what you get in each set, according to the band’s 4AD Records website:

The Minotaur Deluxe Edition ($175) will include all five Pixies studio albums - Come On Pilgrim (1987), Surfer Rosa (1988), Doolittle (1989), Bossanova (1990), and Trompe le Monde (1991) - on 24k layered CD and Blu-ray (five discs total), with reinterpreted artwork by Vaughan Oliver, the graphic designer who created all of the artwork that accompanied the Pixies’ studio albums.

Also included in the Deluxe Edition will be a DVD of a Pixies 1991 performance at the Brixton Academy in London, the group’s videos, possible live tracks, and a 54-page book, all housed in a custom slipcase.

The Minotaur Limited Edition ($450) will include everything in the Deluxe Edition, as well as all five albums on 180 gram vinyl, a Giclee print of Oliver’s artwork, and a 72-page hardcover book, all housed in an over-sized custom clamshell cover.

With CD sales in decline and illegal file-sharing threatening the future of record labels around the world, it is little surprise that bands are looking for new and exciting ways to convince fans to buy their albums.

What is surprising is Continue reading »

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament was mugged outside an Atlanta studio where the band was recording, according to an Associated Press report.

The report quoted the police as saying that three masked men wearing black came out of the woods behind Southern Tracks recording studio and attacked Ament and employee Mark Anthony Smith as they arrived in a rented Jeep late last month,

DeKalb County police further said that the men smashed three of the Jeep’s windows, snatched a Blackberry and two computers and demanded money. Ament jumped out of the passenger side and tried to run, but one of the men pushed him to the ground and stole his passport.

The thieves got away with $3,000 cash, along with computers and other equipment worth more than $4,000. Paramedics treated Ament for head injuries.

New 2009 Pearl Jam Tour Dates. Ozzy vs Eddie Vedder Ukulele Video

Published May 6th, 2009 by Karen

Above: Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder rocks Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man”…on a ukulele, for some reason. Really.

Pearl Jam has just announced the dates of its 2009 tour. The band isn’t straying too far from home, but we imagine more dates will be added soon, so stay tuned for updates, if you’re into this kind of thing.

2009 Pearl Jam Tour Dates:
August 21 - Toronto, ON @ Molson Amphitheatre
August 23 - Chicago, IL @ United Center
Headlining: August 28-30 @Outside Lands Festival San Francisco
Headlining: October 4 @ Austin City Limits Festival
Eddie Vedder solo show: June 17-Nashville, TN @ Ryman Auditorium.

Sorry, that’s it, Pearl Jam fans.

Ok, so it’s not exactly a world tour, but technically it is international since the band is crossing the border into Canada. Good job, guys.

In their defense, the Pearl Jam fellas are probably just tired from sitting around counting cash. The band has been celebrating the (almost) 20th anniversary of the breakthrough album Ten. (Wanna buy a copy for $125? Eddie Vedder is happy to oblige).

News of the band’s not-so-ambitious tour schedule comes after Pearl Jam’s depressingly lame-o TV appearance last week when dozen or so PJ songs were used in a special two-part episode of Cold Case, one of those dumber-than-Law & Order cop-shows on CBS.

Lame TV sell-out attempts aside, Pearl Jam remains one of the cooler groups of grungy Seattle granddads still making music (yes, Chris Cornell, we’re still rolling our eyes at you).

"Thanks for putting up this video. Tom Jones looks awesome in the video. hope you will put some more interesting stuff in future. I got some latest news..."

Unusual Outside Lands Line-up: Pearl Jam, Black Eyed Peas, Mastodon and Tom Jones

Published April 13th, 2009 by Karen

(WARNING: If you watch this video, you WILL get this song stuck in your head. But it’s fun.)

It seems as though there is a new festival announced every day, and this is no exception. The line-up has just been announced for the second edition of the Outside Lands Festival. The festival takes place August 28-30 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

Over 50 performers have been confirmed for the show, but at a glance the line-up sort of looks like an iPod stuck on shuffle-we certainly never expected to see the Black Eyed Peas share a stage with heavy metal monsters Mastodon, or to have enduring grunge band Pearl Jam rock out alongside 68-year-old “It’s Not Unusual” singer Tom Jones, but here it is!

Yeah, we know it’s only April, but pre-sale tickets are up for grabs starting on Wednesday (April 15) and, with a line-up like this, it’s sure to sell-out quickly. The show marks headliner Pearl Jam’s first stateside concert in over a year.

Tickets range from $199-$595 (don’t worry, layaway is available). Complete festival details (including info on tickets, layaway and parking passes) are available on the SF Outside Lands festival website.

The full line-up includes Beastie Boys, Black Eyed Peas, Dirtbombs, Band of Horses, TV on the Radio, Dead Weather, M.I.A., Incubus, Heartless Bastards, M.I.A., Jason Mraz, Deerhunter, Ween, Continue reading »
