Published November 19th, 2009 by Karen

Do STP fans want an album of new songs, or just a tour filled with hits?

Stone Temple Pilots fans were thrilled to see these ’90s rockers back in action over the summer, but now it looks like things are coming to an unexpected halt on the tour track as the group is cancelling scheduled dates in order to Continue reading »

Break-Up: Aerosmith Worried About Tyler’s Sobriety

ABOVE: After 40 years, Aerosmith’s train may have finally stopped rolling. Will fans accept a new singer?

It has been a dramatic few weeks for Aerosmith, to say the least.

After a seemingly jinxed tour plagued by injury, both common (twisted knee) and bizarre (singer dances right off the front of the stage), the band recently made headlines as guitarist Joe Perry announced that singer Steven Tyler had left the band. Set to celebrate its 40th anniversary, the band is now faced with the challenge of finding a new singer.

Of course, break-ups are never quite that simple.

Tyler then shocked everyone as he  Continue reading »

Velvet Underground Reunion in New York Booked

Published November 19th, 2009 by Karen

Once known as Andy Warhol’s house band, the Velvet Underground  is the archetypal NYC band that spawned devotees (and brazen imitators) ranging from Jonathan Richman to the Strokes. Now, the revered group has announced sudden plans for an unexpected reunion—but there’s a catch, of course. Continue reading »

Tyler Rejoins Aerosmith, For Now. Who Should Replace Him?

Although guitarist Joe Perry recently told the world that singer Steven Tyler had quit Aerosmith after 40 years, Tyler seems to disagree.

We’re not sure whether to be happy the band didn’t split up, or sad because they probably should’ve retired sooner.

Regardless of the group’s current state, it’s obvious that relations are strained within the band; Perry claims he and Tyler haven’t written a song together in a decade because Tyler prefers to hire hacks to write cheesy American Idol-worthy hits and power ballads.

So, maybe the band should have some new singers on tap replace Tyler if he eventually quits or falls off of another stage or something.

To be honest, we’re almost bummed that Tyler is sticking around, because we were really, really hoping his departure would inspire CBS to roll out Rock Star: Aerosmith as a follow-up to Rock Star: INXS and Rock Star: Supernova. We’re sure host Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers) is ready to go!

However, just in case there’s no Rock Star: Aerosmith in the works, we’ve put together some suggestions for singers who could replace Steven (and videos of several of them actually performing with Aerosmith!).

Take a look, then feel free to add more suggestions to our list! Continue reading »

Aerosmith Tour Over: Steven Tyler Quits Band of 40 Years

Steven Tyler has quit Aerosmith, as far as I can tell,” guitarist Joe Perry told the Las Vegas Sun newspaper following weeks of speculation.

(Read: Joe Perry and Steven Tyler, Not Speaking)

The members of the 40-year-old Boston rock band have indicated that they are considering hiring a replacement for Tyler.

Considering some rather cruel comments made about Tyler by Perry recently, news that the band has officially called it quits may not come as a shock.

Recently, the band has been plagued by Continue reading »

So, like most late-night hosts, Jimmy Fallon might not be very funny (sorry), but you have to give the guy credit for putting together  cool reunions.

While the Saved by the Bell redux was amusing and creepy, we’re much more excited about Fallon’s latest announcement: The on-air reunion of a classic DC rock band that hasn’t played a note together in 12 years: drumroll, please… Continue reading »

Aerosmith Over? Joe Perry and Steven Tyler, Not Speaking

Joe Perry is plenty pissed that Aerosmith has been temporarily put out of business by Steven Tyler’s tour injury, according to an Associated Press report.

Aerosmith had to cancel their summer tour when Tyler fell off the stage at an August stop and sustained injuries to his shoulder and head.

“The tour was building up to be a great tour, and I was pretty (upset), you know,” Perry said in an interview on Wednesday. Perry said he hadn’t spoken to Tyler in weeks and didn’t know Continue reading »

Reunion Alert: Iggy and the Stooges Reunion Concerts

It had previously been announced that Iggy Pop and the Stooges would be performing at the May 2 and 3 editions of All Tomorrow’s Parties in London, one of ATP’s 10th Anniversary events.

In a new twist, the band has decided to perform the seminal album Raw Power in its entirety–with members of the original Stooges line-up.

Obviously, guitarist Ron Asheton passed away last year, rendering a proper reunion impossible. However, on 1973’s Raw Power, Asheton temporarily switched to bass while James Williamson took over guitar duties. Pop has asked Williamson to re-join the band for ATP-something he hasn’t done since 1974.

Fueled by addiction and in-fighting, the Stooges broke up following the release of 1970’s Funhouse, reformed to record Raw Power, and ultimately folded again in 1974.

Pop’s most recent album, 2009’s Preliminaires, is jazz-influenced concept album inspired by Michel Houellebecq’s novel “La Possibilité d’une île.” Uh-huh. In 2003 the punk icon took a detour into pop-punk, recording Skull Ring: a collection of songs featuring collaborations with the likes of Green Day and Sum 41 (featuring Avril Lavigne’s husband).

The Stooges are always full of surprises, but the one thing we can guarantee: sinewy Iggy Pop will be frighteningly muscular and shirtless (shudder).

Rock’n'roll.

Oasis Breaks Up…Again. Definitely, Maybe.

A fight between Liam and Noel Gallagher, the ever-feuding brothers at the core of Oasis, caused the band to cancel its high-profile gig at Paris’s Rock-en-Seine Festival over the weekend. Shortly thereafter, news spread that guitarist Noel had officially parted ways with the band.

In an official statement posted on the band’s website, Noel wrote:

“It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer…Apologies to all the people who bought tickets for the shows in Paris, Konstanz and Milan.”

For his part, Liam twittered an apology to fans for canceling the band’s scheduled V Festival performance on Sunday.

While an official break-up of the band has not been confirmed, it is difficult to imagine this volatile band replacing one of its two central members. (C’mon, I dare you to name the bassist!–No Wiki allowed.)

Because the band has experienced in-fighting-releated hiatuses several times throughout its career, it is difficult to have a very strong reaction to news of the band’s purported split.

As in the past, odds are the Gallagher boys will patch things up in a few months and hit the stage once more-even if it’s only long enough to pad their bank accounts.

Are you bummed that Noel quit Oasis?
Do you think the band should continue with a new guitarist?
Has Oasis done anything worthwhile since What’s the Story Morning Glory?

Jackson Family Reunion Reality Show May Air on A&E

Published July 18th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: A very colorfully dressed Jackson 5 performs “ABC” on the Carol Burnett show in 1974. It doesn’t take a genius to see that a Jackson 5 reunion without Michael is a bad idea.

Prior to the unexpected death of Michael Jackson in June, his family was involved in the filming of a reality TV show.  MTV reports that, “The plan was always for this to be a special with the possibility that it could turn into a series,” according to a statement by A&E vice president of publicity Dan Silberman.

No stranger to celebrity reality shows, the A&E network is home to Hammertime (about MC Hammer), Gene Simmons Family Jewels (about Kiss bassist/general loudmouth Simmons), as well as reality shows about addiction, tattoos and bounty hunters.

Will fans watch a Jackson show without Michael?

In light of the fact that the series involved Continue reading »
