Music geeks everywhere were delighted today as Matador Records sent out a message via Twitter, “confirming the worst kept secret of all time; the return of Pavement.”

A decade after calling it quits, the ’90s indie rockers will be back in their lo-fi, slightly greyer glory, starting with a concert date Sept. 21, 2010 at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park.

UPDATE: After the initial date sold out instantly, Matador Records announced that Pavement would add a second show Sept. 22, 2010, also at Rumsey Playfield. Oh, and 3rd. And now a 4th show, same venue.

Yeah, you read that right: The show is a year away.

However, tickets for the show go on sale tomorrow. (complete ticket info, below)

But, don’t call it a comeback, Matador notes that fans should, “be advised this tour is not Continue reading »

Remember the ’90s? Cranberries Reunion Tour

Everybody Else is Having a Cheesy Reunion Tour, So Why Can’t They?

In the early ’90s, Irish music stars the Cranberries were one of the biggest alt-pop bands around.

Thanks largely to the unique vocals of Dolores O’Riordan, the band scored a ton of hits, including “Linger” and “Dreams” (from the band’s 1993 debut, Everybody Else is Doing it, So Why Can’t We?), and later “Zombie,” “Salvation,” and “Ridiculous Thoughts,” among others.

O’Riordan’s dedicated fan(s) may be disappointed to learn that she canceled her world tour  just as her second solo album, No Baggage, is set to hit shelves.

Of course, those fans will probably be happy to learn that she canceled her tour because she’s decided to reunite the Cranberries and hit the road.

We’re not sure this matters much, really. I mean, can you even name another member of this band? Wouldn’t it have been pretty much the same if you saw O’Riordan play “Linger” at one of her solo concerts?

Then again, we’re pretty sure we never want to hear the shrieky Irish shrieks of “Zombie” ever again, anyway, so the tickets are all yours. Enjoy.

BELOW: The Office making the case for “Zombie” being one of the least karaoke-friendly songs ever. Thanks, TV.

Video: Nine Inch Nails’ Final Show? Bonnaroo 2009

Published June 15th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Bonnaroo 2009, NIN’s Plays “March of the Pigs” for the last time ever, in America. Maybe. (See the original 1994 music video, here)

Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor has been making headlines frequently lately thanks to his Twittered criticism of ex-grunge star Chris Cornell, his recent engagement, his help reuniting Jane’s Addiction and, most recently, his exit from Twitter due to “idiots.”

Today, the icon of ’90s industrial pop noise is making news for something that actually has to do with his own music career-or the end of it, anyway.

During NIN’s performance at this weekend’s massive Bonnaroo music festival, the singer reportedly stopped between songs and announced, “It just dawned on me that this is our last show ever in the United States…Don’t be sad.”

Don’t worry.

Is this really the end of NIN? Or do you think there’ll be a reunion tour in six months?

2009 No Doubt Tour Dates, Paramore Opens

Gwen Stefani is stepping out of the solo spotlight and reuniting with her Anaheim, CA ska-pop outfit No Doubt for a massive summer tour. Since the group’s new album isn’t ready to go yet, fans are in for a trip down memory lane, with tons of vintage No Doubt material (and probably the band’s recent Gossip Girl-approved cover of Adam Ant’s “Stand and Deliver”).

Young rock newcomers, and Twilight Soundtrack faves, Paramore (video after the jump) open most of the shows, which is fitting since orange-haired singer Hayley Williams probably grew up listening to Stefani and Co.

Meet Gwen Stefani, No Doubt on 2009 Tour Dates: $2,000 (or more)

In addition to reuniting for a summer tour, pop-ska band No Doubt has just announced the launch of its own charitable foundation which the band hopes to use to host charity events, auctions and outreach to help raise funds for organizations in need.

The band intends to auction of VIP tickets packages, memorabilia and chances to meet the band as a way to raise money for four charities picked by the band members.

According to the band’s website, 60% of proceeds will be immediately distributed to the four main charities (as yet, unnamed), while the remaining 40% will be distributed to other charities and emergency relief efforts throughout the year, and used to fund the daily operations of the No Doubt Foundation.

Additionally, the foundation will post a full accounting of funds at the end of the year for fans to review, in case anyone is actually that bored.

The VIP/Meet and Greet packages are available for each of the dates on No Doubt’s 2009 Tour.

Packages are up for auction until Continue reading »

Bamboozle Fest 2009: No Doubt, Cover Bands, Third Eye Blind Reunion (?)

Published May 1st, 2009 by Karen

This weekend, New Jersey is going to be filled with even more, um, unusual folks than usual as the Bamboozle Festival rolls into town and lures all the emo kids out of their bedroom-mope-caves for a weekend of unnecessary reunions and pop-punk cover bands. Um, sweet?

Expect a weekend of bad haircuts and worse music. Sorry, dorks.

Among the bigger names on this year’s bill are Third Eye Blind (seriously?!), No Doubt (newly reunited, for some reason), Fall Out Boy (insert your own Bronx Mowgli joke, here), Asher Roth, Taking Back Sunday, and the Maine (owners of the worst emo haircuts in recent memory).

No Doubt is headlining the fest, but Gwen Stefani’s hubby, Gavin Rossdale, isn’t quite as lucky these days. He’s relegated to playing after Bloodhound Gang on Saturday afternoon.

On the plus side, at least Gwar (who claim to be aliens from Antarctica sent to rule the earth, or something like that) will be there, rocking their homemade costumes and fake blood. (Remember when Gwar was on on Jerry Springer?)

If that’s not bad enough, the day before Bamboozle, NJ is hosting the Hoodwink Fest-a festival of cover bands featuring bands you’ve probably never heard of doing songs by bands they should probably just leave alone.

Boys Like Girls will play Coldplay songs.
Anti-Flag plays the Clash
Sum 41 plays Metallica
And so on.

Some lesser-known bands are playing Avril LaVigne and Britney Spears. Wow, pop-punk bands doing lame pop songs. Um, is this funny anymore?

Full line-up, at the Hoodwink Fest page.

Preview: New Alice in Chains CD, New Singer 7 Years after Staley’s Death.

Published April 28th, 2009 by Karen

COMPARE: AinC’s new singer performs “No Excuses” in the video (above) with the original version of the song (after the jump).

Former alt-rock posterboys Alice in Chains will reportedly be releasing a new album in September. Even with grunge buried, the band’s popularity endures among many rock fans thanks to hits such as “Man in the Box,” “Would,” “Angry Chair” and “No Excuses.”

However, there is one slight problem with a new Alice in Chains CD: lead singer Layne Staley has been dead since 2002, when he died of an apparent heroin overdose.

Rather than dusting off an Ouija board and calling up Layne to find out if he’s jamming with Kurt Cobain in the afterlife, Alice in Chains has enlisted a singer named William DuVall to fill Layne’s Doc Martens.

Um, who?

In AinC’s defense, hiring an unknown singer was probably a better idea than Continue reading »

Good news if you miss the Mummies after watching the “Planet of the Apes” video we posted earlier: The band is back from the grave (sorry) for a handful of reunion shows. (Don’t forget that stages will be invaded by an upcoming Gories and Oblivians Reunion Tour, too!)

After swearing that their 2008 reunion show in Spain would be their last, the spooky boys are bandaged up and hitting the road for some shows including a trio of US dates as well as a newly announced show in France and a mysterious show at an eight-day music festival somewhere in Sardegna, IT .
