Two independent music labels are suing Guns n’ Roses and Universal Music Group, alleging a track off Axl Rose’s Chinese Democracy copied parts of two songs by German electronic music artist Ulrich Schnauss, according to a report on RollingStone.com.

In a statement released to the press Guns’n'Roses’ manager Irving Azoff denied that the band did anything improper. “The snippets of ‘ambient noise’ in question were provided by a member of the album’s production team who has assured us that Continue reading »

Did Coldplay Steal Cat Stevens Song?

Singer-songwriter Cat Stevens agreed yesterday that the Coldplay song, “Viva La Vida,” sounds like one of his 1973 songs, but he did not say he would sue the British band for plagiarism, according to a Reuters report.

“My son brought it to my attention and said: ‘Doesn’t that sound like ‘Foreigner Suite?’” Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam, told Reuters. The song definitely sounds like it,” he said of his song.  “It has such logical chords and the melody has to be what it is…”

Islam said he still might sue Coldplay, depending upon how the Joe Satriani suit turns out. The American guitarist has sued Coldplay, accusing the British band of copyright infringement and claiming that substantial original portions of his song “If I Could Fly” are recycled in “Viva La Vida.” Satriani is seeking damages

Islam has recently come out with a new album called “Roadsinger,” which he will soon be plugging on a visit to the U.S.

Live Review: Mr. Quintron, Miss Pussycat Show NYC Rock’n’roll Fun

Published April 23rd, 2009 by Karen

Last night at Santo’s Party House, Mr. Quintron and his partner in delightful weirdness, Miss Pussycat, put on one of the strangest and most entertaining shows that NYC has seen in quite some time. (That is, if anyone could actually see it through the smoke of the hyperactive fog machine.)

Mopey indie-rockers were nowhere in sight, as Quintron morphed into a one man band simultaneously playing organ, drums and his absurdly awesome homemade music machine, the Drum Buddy.

Mr. Quintron’s vocals sometimes resembled a wilder, swampier, thankfully less-annoying, Jack White, while Miss Pussycat danced non-stop and sang along like a one-woman-cheer-squad (video)

With Quintron dressed in an Elvis-ish white jumpsuite with a cobra on the back, and Miss Pussycat appearing as a petite Amy Poehler-ish figure sporting a blunt blond bob, puffball hat and glow-in-the-dark dress Continue reading »

Home Sweet Home? Carrie Underwood vs. Motley Crue

American Idol champ Carrie Underwood recently did something surprising: She covered a Motley Crue song.

The glitzy country crooner is offering up her version of the ’80s rockers’ hit “Home Sweet Home.” It is the song that AmIdol plays when a contestant gets sent home.

Although it’s better than the awful song that American Idol used to play whenever the weekly loser was sent packing (Daniel Powter’s unbearable ”Had a Bad Day), we think Underwood’s song is still pretty lame.

Some proceeds from Underwood’s song will benefit the Humane Society of the United States.

Motley Crue’s proceeds are probably going to strippers and alimony.

So, how does the former Idol fare with the party rock group’s monster ballad?

Meh.

Check out both versions (after the jump) and tell us what you think. Continue reading »

Aretha Tops Elvis? Another Reason Rolling Stone Sucks

Published November 12th, 2008 by Karen

In the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone set to be released on Friday, the magazine is publishing a list of the top 100 singers of the rock era.

The most shocking aspect of this survey is that the King of Rock’n’Roll, Elvis Presley, has been dethrowned. That’s insane! Who is better than Elvis?!

Well, apparently Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles who scored the number one and number two spots, respectively, with Elvis ranking third.

While the list is sure to be obnoxious and off balance, as most stories in Rolling Stone are, the only consolation is that the skewed nature of this poll makes perfect sense once it’s revealed that the people voting on this list included an array of  (mostly lame) music stars such as James Hetfield (Metallica), David Crosby and James Blunt (seriously).

Do you agree that Aretha is better than Elvis?
Who would you declare the greatest rock singer ever?

Secret to a Happy (rock star) Marriage and Free Wedding Music

Published October 7th, 2008 by Karen

Who has been married 44 years: One of the Beatles or the Rolling Stones?

With rock stars like Paul McCartney and Phil Collins making headlines for their $50 million dollar divorce settlements, it’s starting to seem as though all Hollywood weddings and rock’n’roll marriages are doomed.

However, long before Britney was divorced (twice) or Mariah Carey eloped, rock stars were walking down the aisle—and making it last.

Today we’re taking a look at some of the longest-lasting marriages in the rock music world. Members of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones have had successful relationships, but who comes out on top? Find out! (And, if you’re in the mood, check out some free wedding music mp3s).

5. Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) and Patti Hansen: Married 25 Years
Yeah, we were pretty shocked by this one, too!

4. Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne: Married 26 Years

And, the winner of best Rock Star marriage is…
1.
Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones
Charlie Watt married Shirley Ann Shepherd in October of 1964, which means they’ve been married for 44 years. While the other Rolling Stones were out partying, the soft-spoken drummer used to speak openly about how much he missed his wife and family while on tour.

Being married for 44 years is a long time by any standard, and considering Watts is a member of one of the most famous bands in the world—The Rolling Stones—it’s AMAZING!

Pink Floyd Co-Founder Dead at 65

Published September 15th, 2008 by Karen

Richard Wright dead at 65.

He may not have been the most well-known member of the band, but keyboardist Richard Wright was with Pink Floyd from the beginning, having co-founded the group with Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Nick Mason in 1965. (Guitarist David Gilmour joined the fold shortly thereafter.)

Wright penned classic Pink Floyd tracks such as “Us and Them” and “The Great Gig in the Sky.”

The iconic British band became the epitome of psychedelic rock, as well as an archetype of drug-fueled excess as exemplified by the rise and fall of former frontman Barrett.

Wright was expelled from the group during the tumultuous session for The Wall, but remained a side-player throughout the band’s career, formally rejoining for the recording of latter day albums such as the Division Bell—recorded without Waters.

A statement from Wright’s family released to AP reports that Wright passed away after battling cancer. He was 65.

Winehouse Not the Only Musician Banned in America

Published February 8th, 2008 by Karen

With the recent controversy surrounding what appears to be a video of Amy Winehouse smoking crack, it seems that things just keep getting worse for the troubled singer.

Although the singer has been nominated for several awards for her album Back to Black and the hit single, “Rehab”, it was recently announced that the US government has banned Winehouse from entering the country due to her criminal record.

Of course, Winehouse isn’t the first musician to be banned from the land of the free.

Music Banned in America

The Kinks
As their career was exploding in the 1960s thanks to hit songs like “You Really Got Me,” the Kinks hit something of a brick wall after being banned from the United States for four years following their 1965 tour, likely due to their wild behavior–onstage and off. Regardless of this sizable hurdle, group’s career endured, and the Kinks’ influence remains strong. However, the band never tapped into the mainstream the way contemporaries like the Beatles and Rolling Stones did.

Sex Pistols

It took quite a bit of persuasion, but the members of controversial punk band behind “Anarchy in the U.K” were eventually issued visas and permitted to enter the US to tour in 1978. The delay was due to US authorities’ concern over the group’s rowdy reputation and criminal records. The band may have been better off staying home. After less than a month of touring, bassist Sid Vicious fell deeper into heroin addiction and numerous violent brawls, and singer Johnny Rotten quit the band during a show in California. The band broke up and shortly thereafter Vicious stood accused of murdering his girlfriend before eventually overdosing in 1979. Vicious’ turbulent life is famously chronicled in the (fictionalized) film, “Sid and Nancy.”

And…

In addition to the instances where performers have been barred or delayed from entering the US, music censorship is common on American television and radio.Websites such as Free Muse do a nice job of chronicling the patterns of censorship in America, including the common practice of cutting or altering offensive lyrics in radio broadcasts (even Avril Lavigne’s bubblegum pop song “Girlfriend” has had lyrics cut).

MTV
Although it positions itself as the home of “reality” TV and coolness, MTV is no stranger to censorship. Recently, Sean Kingston’s popular song “Beautiful Girls” video had the word “suicidal” cut by MTV. Many other songs have faces similar fates, although the station doesn’t have an official list of banned words or phrases.

9/11

And does anyone remember the list of “lyrically inappropriate” songs that over a thousand Clear Channel radio stations allegedly temporarily banned in the wake of 9/11? Among the list of 160 songs recommended for the black list were Buddy Holly & the Crickets “That’ll Be the Day,” Van Halen “Jump,” Beastie Boys “Sabotage” and Frank Sinatra “New York, New York.” (view the complete list here)

While ideas of censorship are always ugly, in Winehouse’s case, it seems as though staying home and attending rehab should be much more important to performing “Rehab” on the Grammys.

Was the US right to ban Winehouse from traveling to America? Leave a comment and tell us what you think.
