We Dare You Not to Laugh: Boston Cop Urinates on Metallica Fan at Concert.

Published March 30th, 2009 by Karen

Yeah, we know it’s probably wrong to laugh at this story, but, y’know, sometimes something just makes you laugh, even though you know you shouldn’t (like when you see your pal get hit in the junk with a football or something). Or, sometimes, if you don’t drink enough coffee for breakfast on Monday morning, dumb stuff seems  unusually funny. Either way, here we are.

Today, while we were roaming around the internet (um, we mean, working), we started looking for tour dates and ended up on the Rolling Stone page. Meh.

Anyway, while there we noticed RS had posted possibly the most awesome headline ever:

(Drumroll, please…)

Ex-Cop Charged for Urinating on Metallica Fan at Boston Concert

Maybe we’re wrong, but we’re pretty sure that the only thing that could’ve made this funnier would’ve been if the cop had actually taken a wiz on James Hetfield-a scenario that might’ve gone something like this: Continue reading »

Is Metallica the Worst Band in the Rock’n'Roll Hall of Fame? Maybe Not.

Published January 16th, 2009 by Karen

The latest batch of musicians and songwriters being inducted into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame was just announced. We are completely stoked to see rockabilly guitar queen Wanda Jackson on the list–she’s not hailed as “the female Elvis” for nothing, kids.

However, our eyes rolled back in our heads in disgust at the sight of metal’s most over-hyped sellouts (ahem, Metallica), although we know they’re not even the lamest band in the club. So, today, we’re taking a look at some other folks who, like Metallica, don’t deserve to pay admission for a tour of the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame, let alone be inducted into it. Continue reading »

Madonna Sucks, but Other Girls Rock the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Published March 12th, 2008 by Karen

Yesterday we asked what you thought about Madonna being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Does this pop tart belong in the same room with Mick Jagger?

We don’t think so, but we’re funny that way.

But that doesn’t mean women don’t rock.

In fact, there are plenty of cool chicks in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So, today we’re looking at some of our favorite female members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. These are just a few of our top picks, so for the complete list of Hall of Fame members, go here.

Favorite Female Rock Hall of Fame Members

The Ronettes—“Be My Baby” video
—It’s impossible to think of ‘60s girl groups without thinking of the Shangri-Las and the Ronettes. We’re still waiting for the Shangri-Las to get picked.

Ike and Tina Turner—“Proud Mary”
—We like Ike…and Tina. They were better together than apart, with Tina’s ‘80s comeback leaving us colder than Thunderdome. But with Tina’s voice and Ike’s guitar, in the ‘60s this duo couldn’t be beat. Watch ‘em play it here.

The Pretenders—“Don’t Get Me Wrong”
—This Ohio rock band has been led by super-cool singer/guitarist Chrissie Hynde since 1978. Scarlett Johansson did a karaoke version of “Brass in Pocket” in Lost in Translation (here), but you can watch the real video here.

Martha and the Vandellas—“Dancing in the Streets”
—They weren’t exactly a rock band, but the group behind “Dancing in the Streets” and “Nowhere to Run” certainly rocks. David Bowie and Mick Jagger made a hilariously awful video for “Dancing in the Streets” in the ‘80s, see it here.

Velvet Underground—“Sister Ray”
—Drummer Moe Tucker is our favorite part of this Lou Reed-centric group. Yeah, temporary fixture Nico was a girl, too, but let’s be honest, she’s beyond overrated.

Did we forget your favorite hall of famer?

Does Madonna Belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Published March 11th, 2008 by Karen

There was a time when the difference between pop music and rock’n’roll music was as clear-cut as the difference between Frank Sinatra and Buddy Holly.

But times have changed, apparently.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has just inducted its 2008 group of “rock” stars, chief among them, Madonna. To be nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, performers needed to have released their debut singles in 1982 or earlier.

While there is no arguing that Madonna is probably the biggest pop star in the world (particularly now that Michael Jackson is completely bonkers), is she really a rock star?
At a record store, you certainly wouldn’t look for the Material Girl in the rock section.

At the induction ceremony, two of Madonna’s hit songs were performed by punk icon Iggy Pop–who is not a member of the Hall of Fame. Something is very wrong with this picture: a pop star is in, but a legitimate rock legend is out?!

This year’s other inductees seem more obviously suited to the honor, including John Mellencamp, the Ventures, Leonard Cohen and the Dave Clark Five.

Other artists nominated this year, but not inducted, include disco star Donna Summer and rap/hip-hop artists the Beastie Boys and Afrika Bombaataa.

Of course, it could be argued that none of these groups are “rock and roll” groups either—with the possible exception of the Beastie Boys, who began as a punk outfit.

But Donna Summer? Get real! Is there anything LESS rock’n’roll than disco? Probably not.

Do these artists deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
What is rock and roll? Is Madonna a “rock star?”

Leave a comment and tell us what you think.
