Peruvian rock fans must have a complex by now.

According to the Associated Press, for the third time in recent years a visiting foreign pop star has expressed thanks to the wrong country in the midst of a concert performance.

In a concert in Peru’s capital, Lima, Tuesday, the lead singer of British band Continue reading »

Supersuckers 2009 Tour Dates and 20th Anniversary CD

Quick how many bands can you name from Arizona?

If you forgot to say the Supersuckers, you’ve failed today’s pop quiz. Sorry.

Over the years, the Supersuckers have released a solid string of rock albums for labels such as Sub Pop, successfully dabbled in slightly stoned country music and even served as Willie Nelson’s backing band, making it hard to argue with the boys when they declare themselves the Greatest Rock’n'Roll Band in the World.

Almost always on tour (tonight they play Belfast), singer/bassist Eddie Spaghetti and the boys are celebrating their 20th Anniversary with the release of a double disc live album (thanks to Snob’s Music for the tracklisting tip).

Featuring 36 songs on two CDs, the album collects music from the band’s entire career, including several songs that are appropriate considering today’s date (go on, look at the calendar). “I Want the Drugs,” “Non Addictive Marijuana,” and “Killer Weed.” Subtle, right?

Fans of everything from AC/DC, Kiss, Willie Nelson, Spinal Tap and the Ramones are likely to find something to enjoy with the Supersuckers cartoonish rock’n'roll.

Keep reading for more info on the disc, tracklisting, the current list of Supersuckers tour dates and a video, too! Continue reading »

Tax Relief Music with Beatles, Kinks, Johnny Cash and More

Published April 15th, 2009 by Karen

“Taxman’s taken all my dough…”

The saying goes that the only certainties in life are death and taxes, and while we certainly hope that everyone makes it through the day, we also hope everyone remembered to file their taxes.

Tax day is a drag, but it has inspired some great songs, including the Kinks classic “Sunny Afternoon” (above) and the Beatles’ “Taxman” (featured in a fun animated video below).

Of course, plenty of stars have had problems with the tax man over the years. Keep reading for the scoop on some well-known tax-evaders, and let us know what songs to add to our playlist of topical tunes (so far, we’ve got Johnny Cash, Relient K, Cheap Trick-who should we add?). Continue reading »

Unwigged and Unplugged: Spinal Tap Reunion Tour No Joke.

Published March 6th, 2009 by Karen

The funniest fake band ever, Spinal Tap, is doing something that proves its own theory that, “There’s a fine line between clever and stupid.”

Those nearly immortal lines were uttered by Spinal Tap singer/guitarist David St. Hubbins (aka actor/comedian/musician Michael McKean) in the greatest rockumentary/mockumentary ever made: This is Spinal Tap.

While that movie was one of the greatest, and perhaps most (unfortunately) accurate, portraits of rock’n'roll excess and dimwittedness ever made, the band’s decision to reunite in the real world is no laughing matter.

(Complete Spinal Tap Tour Dates after the jump)

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of This Is Spinal Tap, the (semi) fictional trio has announced plans for a reunion tour that finds the members appearing without their costumes and wigs and instead placing the focus on the music.

Um, Spinal Tap is hilarious, but the group hasn’t exactly been pumping out hit records. Which reminds us: the trio is also preparing to release a new Spinal Tap CD, for some reason.

The “Unwigged and Unplugged” tour hits 30 cities and finds actors/musicians McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest performing as themselves rather than their over-the-top Spinal Tap characters. In addition to stripped-down versions of Spinal Tap’s hair-metal hits, the trio will perform songs from A Mighty Wind, their Tap-like movie about folk music.

The good news is that even outside of their Tap personas, these guys will probably pretty entertaining. With ties to Saturday Night Live, SCTV and the Simpsons, their brand of comedy is hard-to-beat.

Of course we’d still rather see these guys in concert with Guest performing as his Spinal Tap character Nigel Tufnel. Tufnel is a rock god. Guest is boring little dude who is married to uber-annoying actress Jamie Lee Curtis. Who would you rather see unleash a wild guitar solo on “Stonehenge” or “Sex Farm”?

Yeah, that’s what we thought.

Fortunately, the band is planning a full-on Spinal Tap tour to coincide with the release of Tap’s new album. No word on whether the new album will be rock’n'roll, or some sort of jazz odyssey.

Johnny Cash is a Hip-Hop Star? Well, sort of. Joaquin Phoenix rap video

Published January 19th, 2009 by Karen

While it has become common to hear recordings of Johnny Cash singing songs by Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden and Neil Diamond, are hip-hop songs next?

Well, sort of.

Joaquin Phoenix rose to superstardom thanks to his starring role in the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, and while the oddball actor declared his retirement from acting in the fall, it seems that he may be pursuing a new career—in hip-hop. (Yup, there’s a video. Keep reading.) Continue reading »

5 Things You Didn’t Know About ABBA Plus Free ABBA Music

Published July 23rd, 2008 by Karen

This group should’ve faded away in the ‘70s, but for some reason ABBA has endured. Last week Mamma Mia hit theatres. Starring Meryl Streep, the movie musical is based on the successful Broadway play inspired by the music of ABBA.

ABBA fans are wild about it and can’t seem to get enough of this Swedish pop sensation, so today we’re offering something special for all the ABBA fans:

Five Things You Probably Didn’t Know About ABBA

1. In addition to being a palindrome, ABBA is an acronym for the band members’ names (Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn, Anni-Frid)

2. Former ABBA drummer Ola Brunkert died in his garden in 2008. While it was tragic, we can’t help but be reminded of Spinal Tap (one of the band’s drummer’s died in, “a bizarre gardening accident.”).

3. After ABBA, Bjorn and Benny teamed up with Tim Rice for a musical called Chess. The group released a concept album/play soundtrack featured the unlikely hit song, “One Night in Bangkok.” (See the weird video, here.)

4. ABBA is Swedish, but the band scored a hit with 1980’s Gracia Por La Musica, a compilation of ABBA songs performed in Spanish.

5. Mamma Mia! isn’t the only ABBA-themed musical. In 1983 the musical Abbacadabra debuted on French television.

Quick News: Stipe Still Gay. Spitzer Hooker Sings? ABBA is Really Spinal Tap.

Published March 21st, 2008 by Karen

It’s been a long strange week in the music world. Today we’re taking a look back at some of the week’s highlights, or lowlights, depending on your point of view.

Music News Week in Review:

Ashley Alexandra Dupre Won’t Go Away

Is anybody else sick of this girl yet? Well, other than Mrs. Spitzer?

In addition to releasing a dance-pop song (“What We Want” video) that’s so skanky and awful that it makes the Pussycat Dolls look like upstanding citizens with vocal talent, AAD turned up in a library’s worth of “Girls Gone Wild” videos filmed several years back. Which means she doesn’t just dabble in being a skank, she’s a pro.

Don’t worry, now that everyone in the world has seen her, um, talents, this girl will be forgotten faster than Janet Jackson’s last album.

We expect her to “write” a book, apologize for being a home-wrecker and release a family friendly pop album in the not-so-distant future. Ah, the American Dream.

American Idol
This week on American Idol the contestants spent a second week butchering songs of the Beatles. As if Paul McCartney hasn’t had a rough enough week after being forced to fork over $50 million to ex-wife Heather Mills. Many performances were bad, and several were awful, but this week’s loser was Amy Overmyer—the girl with the black/white Cruella DeVil hairdo. Compare: Cruella’s hair VS. Amy’s hair.

R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe is Gay Boring

This week Stipe made headlines by confirming the obvious to Spin and Us Weekly.
Um…a few things come immediately to mind:
1. Duh
2. Who cares?
3. He’s pointedly avoided commenting on this during the successful years of his band’s career, so we can’t help but wonder if the sudden publicity stunt, er, revelation, has anything to do with the impending release of another yawn-worthy album. Surprise! The band’s new album, Accelerate, hits stores in April.
4. Who cares?
5. Isn’t it about time for the REM boys to try to cash in with an acoustic album or something? I’m sure we’d all like to hear a nice acoustic version of “Losing My Religion” or “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” Ok, maybe not.

ABBA Drummer Dies a Spinal Tap Death
Ok, it’s not funny that this guy died. We don’t love ABBA, but even WE wouldn’t wish for the band’s drummer to crash through a glass door at his home in Spain and then try to seek help, only to die in the garden. That’s sad and we’re sorry for his family.
But, we can’t help thinking of the movie Spinal Tap and the way the band’s drummers kept dying under mysterious circumstances—including a “bizarre gardening accident.”
Watch the clip, here.

And Some Other Stuff…
Sure, some other stuff happened this week, but, well, it didn’t make us laugh. So that’s it for Music Week Review. Check back soon for more articles, news, free music and other stuff.
