Singer Katy Perry’s representatives are attempting to stop an Australian fashion designer from trade-marking her clothing label with the brand name Katie Perry, according to a Reuters report.
The designer, who was born Katie Jane Perry, started her high-end Katie Perry loungewear label two years ago, according to Reuters. She initiated a trademark application in September 2008 and recently opened her first store in Sydney. But she was hit with a cease-and-desist order from reps of the recording artist, in an attempt to halt the “similar name” being used in connection with the clothing label.
The pop star’s label, EMI, sent the clothing designer a letter informing her of their artist’s intention to file for trademark protection in Australia. The artist, whose real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, is very popular down under; her tune “I Kissed a Girl” peaked at number one, and she snagged best newcomer at the MTV Australia Awards in March
