Willie Nelson 2009 Tour Dates, Happy Birthday!

Published April 30th, 2009 by Karen

On this date, many years ago, a great musician was born.

No, not lame-o Chris Henderson of NASCAR rockers 3 Doors Down (although, this is his 38th  b-day, meh.).

We’re talking about the red-headed stranger himself: Willie Nelson.

Nelson is 76 today, and we’re not sure whether his longevity is attributable to his music, or if he’s just smoked like a ham. Either way, the man is hitting the road for a massive summer tour, including 22 shows at baseball parks alongside Bob Dylan and John Mellencamp.

At 76, he’s rocking the globe? We’re not nearly that old, and we can barely convince ourselves to get out of bed before noon. Keep it up, Willie.

Above, Willie takes a stab at Dave Matthews’s bummer of a song, “Gravedigger.” We think this was supposed to have the same heartbreaking impact as Johnny Cash doing Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt,” but Willie just kinda looks worried and confused through the whole thing…which is sad in a different way. Willie plays multiple characters in the video, including a priest, chauffeur, gravedigger and a corpse.

Plus, a live version of a classic tune with Bob Dylan. Continue reading »

Supersuckers 2009 Tour Dates and 20th Anniversary CD

Quick how many bands can you name from Arizona?

If you forgot to say the Supersuckers, you’ve failed today’s pop quiz. Sorry.

Over the years, the Supersuckers have released a solid string of rock albums for labels such as Sub Pop, successfully dabbled in slightly stoned country music and even served as Willie Nelson’s backing band, making it hard to argue with the boys when they declare themselves the Greatest Rock’n'Roll Band in the World.

Almost always on tour (tonight they play Belfast), singer/bassist Eddie Spaghetti and the boys are celebrating their 20th Anniversary with the release of a double disc live album (thanks to Snob’s Music for the tracklisting tip).

Featuring 36 songs on two CDs, the album collects music from the band’s entire career, including several songs that are appropriate considering today’s date (go on, look at the calendar). “I Want the Drugs,” “Non Addictive Marijuana,” and “Killer Weed.” Subtle, right?

Fans of everything from AC/DC, Kiss, Willie Nelson, Spinal Tap and the Ramones are likely to find something to enjoy with the Supersuckers cartoonish rock’n'roll.

Keep reading for more info on the disc, tracklisting, the current list of Supersuckers tour dates and a video, too! Continue reading »

Billy Bob Thornton’s band, The Boxmasters, have cancelled the remainder of their Canadian tour after Thornton’s nasty remarks about Canadian audiences spurred outrage in the country, according to an Associated Press report.

In a television interview on CBC, Thornton compared Canadian concert audiences to “mashed potatoes with no gravy.” According to the news service, the remark was made in response to the interviewer’s questions about Thornton’s film career, which the actor turned musician did not want to answer.

The Boxmasters had been opening for Willie Nelson, and a note posted on Nelson’s Web site Friday said the Boxmasters were canceling the rest of their Canadian dates “due to one band member and several of the crew having the flu.”

The Thornton interview was an Internet sensation over the weekend and prompted many celebrity news outlets to put their own spin on the story. Entertainment Weekly’s Web site ran the headline, “Billy Bob Thornton: What’s his problem?”
