Jay-Z Performs in Place of Ailing Beastie Boys: Good Choice?

Published July 23rd, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: At Bonnaroo 2009, Beastie Boys and special guest Nas debut  “Too Many Rappers” from the band’s upcoming album, Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 1.

Earlier this week, Adam “MCA” Yauch of the Beastie Boys posted a very personal video on YouTube announcing to fans that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

As a result, the band has decided to delay the release of its anticipated new album, Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 1, as well as take a break from touring until Yauch’s doctors decide it is ok for him to return to work.

In addition to their own tour dates, the Beastie Boys were scheduled to perform at several summer festivals, including All Points West, Outside Lands, and Lollapalooza 2009.

The organizers of those concerts have announced which performers will fill the Beasties’ headlining slots at those shows, with Jay-Z making his U.S. festival debut to fill in for the boys at Continue reading »

Pretenders Creep Out Radiohead, Play NYC with Cat Power

Published June 12th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: The Pretenders school Radiohead with a new take on “Creep.

Let’s face it, there aren’t really a lot of great female rock stars in the world anymore.

Sure, Karen O. of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is getting a lot of attention these days, but admit it: She’s really just a tone-deaf Chrissie Hynde wannabe.

Which makes us happy to announce that the real Chrissie Hynde is hitting the stage with the Pretenders in NYC this summer to show the kids how it is done.

An interesting pair of music-making ladies will join Hynde and Co, as actress-turned-singer Juliette Lewis brings her theatrical rock antics and the oddly overrated Cat Power offers her jewelry commercial jingles and stage-fright meltdowns.

The show takes place August 10 as part of the Central Park SummerStage series. Unlike many of SummerStage’s shows, this is not a free event ($49+stupid Ticketmaster fees). Tickets are on sale now.

If your pockets still hurt from yesterday’s tax payments, we’ve got something you’ll appreciate: free music.

Not just free music, but free music that’s actually pretty good.

The folks at Anti- Records (home to Tom Waits and Neko Case, among others), is sharing a CD’s worth of free music, and all you have to do is download it (and maybe make your own fancy CD cover. Do people still do that? We hope so!).

A fun intro to the Anti- catalog, the CD mixes established artists with up-and-comers, ranging from folksy newbies and experimental indie acts to alt-country stars, soul legends and mellowed-out old punks. It’s a pretty diverse line-up.

Neko Case’s “People Got a Lotta Nerve” is sure to get stuck in your head, and indie types will dig N.A.S.A.’s track featuring M.I.A., Santigold and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Tracklisting and downloads, after the jump. Continue reading »
